Online traders pleased with steady demand
Online trade is flourishing. This January, the novomind purchase power index climbed to 102.6 points, to finish higher than the 100.2 points of the previous quarter. Media products, casual wear, entertainment electronics and shoes, in particular, are often purchased online, driving the shopping index up, although electronic and household appliances, and drugstore articles also provide a further boost.
Online trading is immune to frost damage
The Internet is therefore proving to be a robust wintertime sales channel. While traditional stores record falling sales due to cold weather and snow, e-shops are basking in above-average business. A large section of the Internet community has recently made an online purchase and is planning to go on another electronic shopping trip sometime in the near future.
Mobile commerce boosts optimism
Retailers are now looking to mobile Internet for an extra surge in online trading. One in five mobile phone users already own a smartphone, but whether or not these multifunctional devices are also used to shop on the Web depends on the usability of the mobile shop interfaces. “When designing their mobile shops, traders really need to take into account special features, such as touch-screen technology, and the fact that mobile users are on the move, rather than just copying their stationary Internet presences,” novomind CEO Peter Wiedekamm points out.
How the novomind purchasing power index works
The novomind purchasing power index is a first, reflecting buyers' expectations of e-commerce based on a representative survey of Internet customers. The demographics of the online shoppers are chosen so as to represent the age and gender distribution of the entire online population. The survey also covers which products customers have purchased online in the past three months and which products they plan to buy online in the next three months.
